Having a camera inspection can prevent pipe and drain issues
Clogs and leaks are one of the most common plumbing problems in all homes. Although most problems are fixable with a plunger, there could be more of a serious problem that may be more difficult to detect which is why we are here to offer professional help.
When does your plumbing need a camera inspection?
Since everything is connected to your main sewer line some of these plumbing issues can be more complicated and will require our help. Here are some warning signs to keep an eye out for to determine if you need a camera inspection:
- Sewage backup – If you’re experiencing a clog that is only affecting one drain, a snake could most likely fix this problem. However, if multiple drains are backing up this means that it’s a main line clog which could require a camera inspection to see if there is any damage to the line.
- Slow drains – This could involve a kitchen or bathroom drain as well as a toilet.
- Foul odor – If you’re able to smell sewer around your home then there is most likely a crack in the sewer line that would need to be replaced. Smelling sewer at your home is not normal.
- Increased water bills – This could mean that there is a hidden leak somewhere within the lines. Leaks can be very small in which using a camera could have a better chance of finding it to repair it.
- Pests – Have you ever wondered how those unwanted creatures can enter your home? Pests can squeeze into the slightest cracks through your lines and enter your home.
If you are experiencing any of these issues – call us immediately.
Camera inspections keep your plumbing clear and functional
Scheduling a camera inspection is a great way to get a look inside your pipes to detect and repair potential problems. Being able to detect a problem early on is critical. Camera inspections help you in many ways as it’s very accurate and it helps prevent future plumbing problems.
If you’re interested in scheduling an inspection, please give us a call to schedule!
Do you know where your house water shut-off valve is?
Taylor Plumbing Tips and Advice, Service Calls
Having water gushing into your home is unsafe and could cause flooding/damage in the interior of your home. Knowing where your whole house water shut-off valve can be very helpful in case of an emergency.
When you might need to find your shut-off valve
- If your pipes froze and burst (especially if they thawed and are gushing water)
- If you have a new or ongoing leak
- If you need to leave your house for an extended time (vacation, etc.)
Where to find your water shut-off valve if you have city water
Typically, if you are not on a well, the shut-off valve will be located at the perimeter of the house, since that is where the water enters the house. Your water starts at the street and heads to your house so stay on the side that faces the road.
Where to find your water shut-off valve if you have a well
If you have a well, your main water shut-off valve will be near the pressure tank. This might be in your basement, or in a well pump shed in your yard or next to your house.
Preparing to shut off your house water
If you have water gushing out of control in your basement or elsewhere, then there’s no need for prep–just shut it off ASAP!
If you’re getting ready to leave for vacation, or winterizing a summer home before you leave for the season, there’s a bit more to do…
Here is a video on how to winterize your house:
When you find the valve, turn the handle. (If it’s already on, it should only turn one way. Probably counter-clockwise.)
If you still cannot locate the valve, your local plumber certainly can. If you’re in the Nevada County/Grass Valley area, that’s us! Please give us a call at 530-274-7275 and we can certainly turn it off, or at least help you find it. 🙂

Grass Valley Plumber getting ready for Fall
When was the last time you thought about your smoke detectors?
The best time to check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors is when you are already moving around the house to get ready for the next season. Have you check your batteries? Is the unit is working properly? Is the unit in the best place to detect an emergency? Additionally, check to make sure you have extra batteries on hand if the batteries do not need to be replaced just yet. This way you will greatly reduce the time the unit is not working.
At Craig Johnson Plumbing we wanted to share with you a little Fall tip…hopefully, we’ve brought something to your attention that you wouldn’t normally think about…kind of like your plumbing. This is also a good time to check under you sinks for any dampness you may not have noticed, especially in bathrooms that you don’t normally use.
Take care…and enjoy this sweater weather.

Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips for Nevada County
Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year or you’re simply a guest, the last thing you need in a home is for a plumbing problem. First and foremost don’t treat your garbage disposal like a garbage can. Disposals can do a lot of good, however, if you can throw an item away, do it. And NEVER pour grease down the drain. Turkey grease will harden and come back to haunt you.
HERE’S a few tips:
- Don’t put grease, oil, or stringy vegetables, such as celery stalks or potato peels (basically any large, tough food scraps or stringy foods) down the garbage disposal.
- Make sure you turn your garbage disposal on before putting any waste inside, and also let the water run for a few seconds first.
- Since your garbage disposal is one if the most vulnerable pieces of equipment in your home on Thanksgiving Day, consider playing it safe and throwing all food in the garbage instead.
- If something falls into the garbage disposal by accident, NEVER put your hand down the disposal without first turning power off at the source. There is a switch on the garbage disposal unit that will turn power off. If you can’t find the switch, turn off power to the unit from the breaker box.
- If you find yourself in need of some professional plumbing assistance, we will be available to help you out!
Sammie’s Friends and Craig Johnson Plumbing Grass Valley, CA
From our local paper – The Union Grass Valley, CA
A shout out for local businesses! I would like to publicly thank Craig Johnson Plumbing for donating services to Sammie’s Friends’ cat facility.
We desperately needed hot water to clean litter boxes (try cleaning anything in ice cold water)! Also, Jason at Sierra Plumbing Supply donated a hot water heater, Mo from MEM Electrical provided the electrical capability, and Craig and Joel from Craig Johnson Plumbing ran the pipes and completed the installation.
Thank you from the staff, the volunteers, and all the kitties at Sammie’s Friends. Businesses like these need to be supported and recognized for their generosity to our community.
